Appeal Court nullifies Metuh’s conviction, orders fresh trial

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned the conviction and seven-year prison sentence imposed on Olisa Metuh, a former Peoples Democratic Party spokesperson, after he was found guilty of money laundering charges.


In a unanimous decision delivered on Wednesday, a three-member panel led by Justice Stephen Adah held that the proceedings of the Federal High Court leading to Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, were tainted with bias and thus should not be allowed to stand.

Justice Adah, who delivered the lead judgment, held that the trial judge's utterances during the trial established that he was biased against the convicts. As a result, he ordered that the trial be restarted. He also ordered that the case file be returned to the Federal High Court's Chief Judge for reassignment to a judge other than Justice Abang.



Metuh was sentenced to seven years in prison by Justice Abang on February 25, 2020, for unlawfully obtaining N400 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser, which was then led by Col Sambo Dasuki.
